Project Toy Bank

Is it possible to run a toy bank just for a specific project rather than using the ‘official’ toy bank?

If so, are there instructions etc. somewhere for the set up?

Thanks in advance Hugh

Hi Hugh,

sure, but it is not sufficient to just setup a bank, you also need an exchange which knows this bank and works with it.

Start here: https://docs.taler.net/regional/regional-automated-manual.html

Hi Marc, Thanks for the quick reply. Yes, I did exchange setup a couple of years ago when the project was less advanced. So, in addition to the exchange, I think I need this with the SANDBOX setting:

do I need anything else? TIA Hugh

Hi Hugh,
no, libeufin is for IBAN transfers - real money. You don’t need that for your toy bank.

Hi Marc,

Thanks again. What I’m looking for is the module (if it’s public?) that does the toy bank simulation, so I could implement a complete circuit, funding, client withdrawals etc. without involving a real bank. Possibly the module that enables the Kudos demo?

Sorry, this is a bit vague, beginner problems. TIA Hugh

Since an exchange without something to get money and something to spend it is useless, both the bank and the merchant backend are included in the regional currency setup:

Hi folks

OK I now have a (I believe) a regional setup, currency is LEAF. no connection to a conventional fiat bank, a couple of questions:

  1. I’ve issued 1000 LEAF → hughbarnard from admin, so admin has an unlimited debt position as I ‘issue’ from there?
  2. Doing step one I had to add a / in the payto URL just before hughbarnard because I received a malformed message.
  3. I tried hughbarnard -> susanstevens (my second test account) and got: can't access property "startsWith", s6 is undefined every time I typed something in the form on the right hand side, when logged in as hughbarnard

I can’t do two wallets currently because my backup phone is too old (!). I’ll look for another tester in a while, when I understand the infrastructure better and things are further forward.

All the best Hugh

With which wallet(s) are you using your setup? You can run two wallets on one phone: Taler Wallet and Taler Nightly. Sending (P2P) money from one to the other is a bit tricky: At the end of the Send where you see the QR code, you can “share” the talerURI via e-mail to yourself. Then don’t tap on the link (it might open the wrong wallet app), but copy it. Go to the wallet that should receive the money, tap on the Action button, then on iOS on the paste button, on Android “Enter Taler link”.
